Smile PreVue vs DSD vs SmileCloud: An Honest Comparison

Choosing the right smile simulation tool for your practice is a meaningful decision. The market has several options, each with different strengths, limitations, and price points. This is an honest comparison of the major players, including where Smile PreVue fits and where it does not.

We built Smile PreVue because we saw gaps in the existing options. But we also recognize that different practices have different needs. Here is the breakdown so you can make the right choice for your situation.

The Landscape

The smile simulation market broadly falls into three tiers.

Premium design platforms like DSD (Digital Smile Design) offer the most comprehensive smile design capabilities. They require significant investment in both cost and training, but deliver the highest level of design customization.

Mid-range simulation tools like SmileCloud and SmileFy provide good results at moderate price points. They require some design skills and typically involve a manual workflow.

AI-powered instant tools like Smile PreVue and BiteBot SmileGen use artificial intelligence to generate previews automatically, with minimal manual design work.

Each tier serves a different type of practice and a different workflow preference.

DSD (Digital Smile Design)

Price: $6,000+ per month (varies by program) Speed: Hours per case HIPAA compliance: Varies by implementation Learning curve: High (multi-day courses required)

DSD is the gold standard for comprehensive smile design. It offers unmatched customization and design control. If you are a high-volume cosmetic practice or a specialist who builds complex treatment plans, DSD delivers results that no other platform can match.

The tradeoffs are real, though. The cost puts DSD out of reach for most general practices. The multi-day certification courses require time away from the chair. And the design process takes hours per case, which means you cannot run a simulation during a consultation.

Best for: High-end cosmetic specialists, practices with a dedicated design team, clinics where every case is a $20,000+ full-mouth rehabilitation.

Not ideal for: General practices adding cosmetic services, solo practitioners, anyone who needs real-time consultation tools.

SmileCloud

Price: $49 to $149 per month Speed: 10 to 20 minutes per case HIPAA compliance: No built-in HIPAA features Learning curve: Moderate

SmileCloud offers solid smile design capabilities at a more accessible price point. The platform provides good design tools and a library of smile templates that you can customize for each patient.

The main limitation is workflow speed. Each simulation requires 10 to 20 minutes of manual design work. That is too slow for real-time use during a consultation. Most practices using SmileCloud run simulations after the appointment and send results to the patient later. This introduces a delay that can cost you case acceptance, since the patient is no longer in the emotional moment of the consultation.

SmileCloud also lacks built-in HIPAA compliance features. There is no in-app consent management, no patient records system, and no audit logging. If HIPAA compliance matters to your practice (and it should), you need to manage that separately.

Best for: Practices that want design control and are willing to spend time on each simulation. Good for practices with a dedicated coordinator who handles cosmetic case presentations.

Not ideal for: Practices that need instant, chairside results. Practices that require HIPAA compliance built into the platform.

SmileFy

Price: $112 to $333 per month Speed: Approximately 5 minutes per case HIPAA compliance: No built-in HIPAA features Learning curve: Low to moderate

SmileFy is a well-designed simulation tool that runs on Apple devices. It offers a clean interface and produces good-quality previews in about 5 minutes per case.

The Apple-only limitation is the biggest drawback. If your practice uses Windows computers or Android tablets, SmileFy is not an option. The credit-based pricing model also means your cost scales with usage, which can get expensive for high-volume practices.

Like SmileCloud, SmileFy does not include built-in HIPAA compliance. There is no consent management, no patient records, and no audit trail.

Best for: Apple-ecosystem practices that want a balance between speed and design control. Practices with lower cosmetic case volume (credit-based pricing works better at lower volumes).

Not ideal for: Windows or Android users. High-volume practices where per-simulation costs add up. Practices that need HIPAA compliance built in.

BiteBot SmileGen

Price: $97 to $297 per month Speed: About 30 seconds per case HIPAA compliance: No Learning curve: Low

BiteBot SmileGen uses AI to generate instant smile previews. It is fast and easy to use, with a minimal learning curve.

The main limitations are around clinical workflow features. BiteBot is built as a simulation tool, not a practice management tool. There are no patient records, no consent management, no before/after portfolio builder, and no HIPAA compliance. The credit-based pricing model also means costs scale with usage.

Best for: Practices that want fast AI simulation without clinical workflow features. Good for marketing purposes (generating preview images for social media or ads).

Not ideal for: Practices that need patient records, HIPAA compliance, or portfolio building. Practices that want an all-in-one clinical workflow tool.

Smile PreVue

Price: $149 per provider per month (flat rate, unlimited simulations) Speed: About 30 seconds per case HIPAA compliance: Yes, full stack (consent, records, audit logging, encryption) Learning curve: Low (10-minute setup)

Smile PreVue combines AI-powered instant simulation with a full clinical workflow. Built by Amir Hessabi (engineer, previously at BigCommerce) and Dr. Ali Obeidi (prosthodontist at Elite Dental Specialists in Houston), the platform was designed from the ground up for chairside case acceptance.

The core features include:

  • AI-generated smile previews in about 30 seconds
  • 5 treatment types (veneers, whitening, All-on-4, smile makeover, orthodontic alignment)
  • 20+ VITA shades including Classical and Bleach ranges
  • HIPAA-compliant patient records with digital consent
  • Automatic before/after portfolio builder
  • Sharing via SMS, email, or co-branded PDF
  • Patient conversion tracking with completion reminders
  • Audit logging and encrypted storage on Google Cloud
  • Browser-based (works on any device, no app download)

The flat-rate pricing means unlimited simulations with no per-case fees. A practice running 50 simulations per month pays the same $149 as a practice running 5.

Where Smile PreVue is not the right fit: If you need advanced manual design control (moving individual teeth, custom shaping), DSD or SmileCloud give you more design granularity. Smile PreVue optimizes for speed and accessibility, not pixel-level design customization.

Best for: General practices adding cosmetic services. Practices that want instant, chairside simulation with built-in HIPAA compliance. Practices that value speed and simplicity over advanced design control.

Making Your Decision

The right choice depends on your practice type, budget, and workflow preferences.

Choose DSD if you are a high-end cosmetic specialist with the budget and team to support comprehensive smile design. The investment is substantial, but the design capabilities are unmatched.

Choose SmileCloud if you want solid design control and are willing to invest time in each simulation. Best for practices with a coordinator who manages cosmetic presentations.

Choose SmileFy if you are an Apple-only practice with moderate cosmetic volume and want a balance of speed and design control.

Choose BiteBot if you want fast AI simulation primarily for marketing purposes and do not need clinical workflow features.

Choose Smile PreVue if you want instant, chairside simulation with full HIPAA compliance, patient records, and automatic portfolio building. Best for practices that value speed, simplicity, and clinical workflow integration.
