DTS PRO Alternative: DTS PRO vs Smile PreVue Compared

What is a DTS PRO alternative, and when do you need one?

DTS PRO is installed Windows software for building dental treatment simulations. Smile PreVue is a photo-in preview that runs on an iPad or in a desktop browser, generates a veneer or whitening preview in about 20 to 30 seconds, and is priced per provider per month. Which one fits depends on the job: building a wide range of simulations at a desk, or showing a hesitant patient the result before they leave the chair.

Every DTS fact in this post comes from DTS's own pages, read on 2026-10-21, and the page is named next to each number. Smile PreVue is our product, so weigh our side accordingly. We try to be fair to DTS, because it does things we do not.

If you are weighing the wider field of tools, the question underneath is usually case acceptance: what helps a patient say yes in the room instead of "I want to think about it."

What does DTS PRO include, and what does it cost?

DTS runs two websites with two different sets of promotional prices. We name the page behind every figure and do not blend them.

Per dentaltreatmentsimulation.com/dts/pricing-pro (fetched 2026-10-21):

  • The 2D plan ("Simulation & 2D Smile Design") is listed at $48 per month for the first year and $33 per month from the second year. The page says the discount applies to first-year purchases only.
  • The 2D + 3D plan is listed at $67 per month for the first year and $53 per month from the second year.
  • Both plans are billed annually through PayPal, and "by default, all plans will be re-billed automatically."
  • One license can be installed on 2 systems.
  • No free trial is listed. The header offers a "Request a Demo" link.
  • Technical support is included for 30 days from the date of purchase.

Per dtsdigitalsmiles.com (fetched 2026-10-21):

  • The page calls $576 per year the regular price of DTS PRO, billed annually.
  • A limited-period offer is $460 for the first year and $240 per year from the second year, and the offer covers installing DTS PRO on two systems.
  • The page lists free upgrades and fixes, online training and support, and no limit on the number of cases.

The two pages do not present the same promotions. The first lists monthly-equivalent figures by plan, the second lists a single annual figure. For what it is worth, $48 a month across twelve months is $576, which matches the "regular price" on the second page, but we are doing that arithmetic ourselves and neither page says the two are the same plan.

What does DTS list as simulations?

Per dtsdigitalsmiles.com (fetched 2026-10-21), DTS PRO covers laminates and veneers, tooth whitening, digital smile designs, different types of braces, orthodontic tooth movement, bonding, gingivectomy, replacement of missing teeth, and extraoral changes after orthodontics or orthognathic surgery. The page also lists a lab communication module that can serve as an office-to-lab communication tool. Per dentaltreatmentsimulation.com (fetched 2026-10-21), DTS also offers DTS 3D, which takes intraoral scans in STL, OBJ or PLY format.

What does DTS PRO require?

Per dentaltreatmentsimulation.com/dts/pricing-pro (fetched 2026-10-21): a Windows 10 or 11 system, at least a 2 GB graphics card and at least 3 GB of RAM. The 2D software accepts PNG and JPEG images. The same page says Instant Smiles, DTS's video feature, is accessed through an iPad app included with both plans. Per dtsdigitalsmiles.com (fetched 2026-10-21), the software is "compatible with Windows 7, 8 and 10" and you download and install it. The two pages list different Windows versions, so check which applies when you buy.

Neither page mentions HIPAA. That is not a statement about DTS's compliance either way. If PHI handling matters to your practice, ask DTS directly.

How does Smile PreVue compare with DTS PRO?

Here is the side-by-side, limited to rows where both sides have a sourced answer. We left out rows where a DTS cell would need a guess, such as speed, HIPAA status and accuracy.

We do not call either tool cheaper. The units differ: a DTS license installed on two systems versus one Smile PreVue provider, annual billing versus monthly or annual, and different promotional periods. Put the figures next to what each covers, and the real question is which job you are paying for.

What is the Smile PreVue side of that table?

Smile PreVue turns a patient photo into a photorealistic veneer or whitening preview in about 20 to 30 seconds, with 20+ VITA shades, on the iPad you already carry into the operatory. It needs no scanner or other hardware. Processing is HIPAA-compliant under the Google Cloud BAA on Vertex AI. You can read what Smile PreVue includes and see Smile PreVue pricing on the site.

The patient can take the preview home. The practice can share a simulation by email, or by text with the patient's double opt-in, and the practice can produce a branded PDF report.

What does DTS PRO do that Smile PreVue does not?

Quite a lot, and it is worth saying directly. Based on DTS's own pages, DTS PRO offers orthodontic tooth movement, replacement of missing teeth, gingivectomy, 3D designs from intraoral scans and a lab communication module. Smile PreVue previews veneers and whitening from a photo, and nothing else. It does not simulate orthodontic movement, missing teeth or implants, it has no lab module, and it does no 3D from scans.

It also does not integrate with a practice management system. Notes and reports leave Smile PreVue by copy and paste or by sharing, not through a connector.

If your work is multi-discipline planning, a lab handoff, or a design you want to adjust at length at your own desk, DTS is the closer fit. Where the two overlap is narrower: a patient photo turned into a before and after for the consult.

Which tool fits your practice?

Choose DTS PRO when you want to build and adjust a wide range of simulations on a Windows machine, and the work happens at a desk. Choose Smile PreVue when the problem is a patient who says "I want to think about it" and cannot picture the result from where they are sitting. Some practices use both: a planning tool for complex work, and a fast preview for everyday cosmetic consults.

That is the same split we described when comparing Digital Smile Design pricing against Smile PreVue, and the reason we never frame these tools as strict substitutes. If you are comparing more of the market, we have also put Smile PreVue against DSD and Smilecloud side by side, and looked at Smilecloud pricing compared with Smile PreVue on its own.

Questions worth asking any vendor, ours included:

  • What operating system and hardware does it need, and does it run where the consult happens?
  • Is there a trial, and does it need a card?
  • What does the price cover: a license, a system, a provider, a case?
  • How does the vendor handle patient photos, and is there a signed BAA?
  • What does it explicitly not do?

Frequently asked questions

How much does DTS PRO cost?

It depends on which DTS page you read. Per dentaltreatmentsimulation.com/dts/pricing-pro (fetched 2026-10-21), the 2D plan is $48 per month for the first year and $33 per month from year two, and the 2D + 3D plan is $67 then $53 per month, billed annually. Per dtsdigitalsmiles.com (fetched 2026-10-21), the regular price is $576 per year, with a limited offer of $460 for the first year and $240 afterward. Confirm the current price on DTS's own site before you buy.

Does DTS PRO work on an iPad or Mac?

Per DTS's pages (fetched 2026-10-21), the main software lists Windows versions only, and Instant Smiles is accessed through an iPad app. Neither page says whether the main software runs on a Mac, so ask DTS.

Is Smile PreVue a replacement for DTS PRO?

Not for everything. They do different jobs. Smile PreVue previews veneers and whitening from a photo and nothing else, as covered above.

Does Smile PreVue need a scanner or an install?

No. It works from a patient photo on an iPad or in a desktop browser.

Is Smile PreVue HIPAA-compliant, and can I try it first?

Smile PreVue processes data in a HIPAA-compliant way under the Google Cloud BAA on Vertex AI. You can try it first: start a 3-day free trial on the web at app.smileprevue.com/register with no card and up to 3 simulations a day, or download Smile PreVue from the App Store, whichever fits how your practice works.
